Jealous Rivals - Wine Packaging Illustrations
Studio Duco was commissioned by Seppelt Wines, working with design agency Denomination, to create a series of wine label illustrations inspired by the Australian Gold Rush of the 1850s.
The Jealous Rivals collection explores the rivalries, ambitions and hardships of the period, when the discovery of gold in Victoria transformed relationships and brought thousands of prospectors in search of fortune.
Each wine tells a different story. The Shiraz explores the growing tensions between miners, where friendships could quickly turn into rivalries in the pursuit of gold. The Chardonnay focuses on the women left behind, many of whom became independent prospectors and business owners, challenging the expectations of the time.
Using our distinctive etching-style illustration, we created detailed historical scenes inspired by 19th-century engravings, carefully developed to complement the typography and character of the packaging.
A particularly striking feature of the design is the split label, with torn edges finished in gold foil, symbolising the divisions created by the Gold Rush. It was a wonderful opportunity to bring historical storytelling into contemporary wine packaging, creating illustrations that reward a closer look.
