Naomi Novik’s Book Cover Collection

Studio Duco was commissioned by Del Rey, an imprint of Penguin Random House, to create a collection of illustrated book covers for bestselling fantasy author Naomi Novik.

Beginning with The Summer War and followed by Spinning Silver, the collaboration has allowed us to develop a distinctive visual approach across Naomi's books, using our distinctive etching-style illustration.

Each cover draws on the symbolism and atmosphere of its individual story. For The Summer War, we brought together a lute, sword and orchids in an ornamental composition, while Spinning Silver explores a colder, more mysterious world through its imagery of coins and ancient, fairy-tale architecture.

Although the stories inhabit different worlds, the covers share a common visual language. Carefully balanced compositions, delicate linework and considered use of colour give each title its own identity while creating a recognisable connection across the collection.
