A Strange & Terrible Wonder

Commissioned by author Nichole Louise, Studio Duco created the cover illustration and complete book sleeve design for her second novel, A Strange & Terrible Wonder. Following our previous collaboration on her debut, we were delighted to return to her world of historical fiction, this time exploring the unsettling mystery of the Lost Colony of Roanoke.

Set in 16th-century America, the novel blends historical events, folklore and the occult. Drawing inspiration from traditional woodcuts and engravings of the period, Ailisha Shannon illustrated a monstrous, wolf-like creature emerging from the darkness above a burning church. Intricate, flowing linework, bold Gothic typography and a striking black and orange palette combine to create an ominous cover that captures the novel's supernatural atmosphere.
