The Financial Times Weekend

Hot from the press - we just finished working on a series of conceptual illustrations for 'The Obesity Cure' article for The Financial Times weekend magazine.

We loved the brief:

To depict the narrative of a new 'wonder' drug said to end obesity while using Gustav Dore's iconic and angelic biblical illustrations as a reference.

This new drug promises to turn the obesity epidemic on its head with stunning results. But like most things, it's not without its critics...

We went all out for this one, creating a cover, opener, and 3 full-page illustrations in less than 7 days. Let's just say there were a few bags under the eyes as we closed off this very enjoyable collaboration with @ft_weekend.

Out this weekend: A new ‘miracle’ weight-loss drug really works — raising huge questions. FT Weekend Magazine's latest cover story.

Obesity can feel impossible to overcome. On top of the physical struggle, there’s the social stigma attached to it, which can seem as much of an obstacle to healing as the disease itself. But in 1987 a groundbreaking discovery was made, as ‘two teams of academic researchers - one in Copenhagen, another in Boston - simultaneously discovered the effect of a hormone known as GLP-1 on insulin.’ Today, Wegovy is the first in a new generation of obesity treatments which use a hormone to regulate appetite. But there are side effects — and if you stop taking the drug, the weight piles back on.

The FT's Hannah Kuchler explores the possibility that GLP-1 is indeed the discovery that could change the lives of obesity sufferers across the globe, and tracks the journey scientists at Novo have embarked on for years in their efforts to produce a stable version of the hormone in a pill.
